Geology 111G:

Survey of Geology

Students are introduced to fundamental concepts in Geology.  These concepts are used to understand the Earth, the history of the Earth, and the processes that affect the Earth.  In addition, this class builds an appreciation for science, the scientific method, and how humans use scientific principles to understand the Earth specifically and nature more broadly.

Honors 219:

Volcanoes, Earthquakes, and Civilization

Students are exposed to the fundamental causes for volcanic eruptions and earthquakes, understanding their behavior or what we know about them, their effects on civilization, and the scientific method in general.

Chemistry/Geology 520:

Introduction to Geochemistry

Students are introduced to fundamental concepts associated with physical chemistry related to stellar environments of elemental formation, earth differentiation, behavior of elements in a wide variety of terrestrial environments, water, minerals, and rocks.  Fields of stable and radiogenic isotope geochemistry are also introduced as are the origins of isotope variations in different Earth reservoirs such and the crust and mantle.

Students can use the Clean Lab at NMSU for their class research

Geology 399:

Igneous & Metamorphic Petrology

 

Students are introduced to fundamental concepts related to the petrology of igneous and metamorphic rocks.  Main topics include: identification of minerals in both hand samples and thin sections, evaluations of rock textures, identifying petrogenetic histories of rocks, and understanding igneous and metamorphic related genesis/concepts of formation.  Three fields trips are required.

Isotope Geochemistry

Students are introduced to fundamental concepts associated with stellar environments of element formation, earth differentiation, and stable and radiogenic isotopes and their applications in the Earth Sciences.

Geology 562:

Analytical Geochemistry

Students are introduced to fundamental concepts related to the analysis of geochemical characteristics of rocks and minerals including major and trace element and isotopes.  We also review the use of data resulting from these techniques.
